Brewed coffee
Prepare the perfect cup of fresh, aromatic brewed coffee with illy and a thermal brewer
The autodrip coffeemaker is the most popular brewing method in the US, producing an aromatic and flavorful cup of coffee when prepared with the right equipment and grind.
A thermal brewer which is insulated to keep the coffee hot and fresh will yield the very best results. Heat-based units with glass carafes will cook the coffee giving it an unpleasant burnt coffee taste, and should be avoided.
Proper grind is important because beans that are ground too coarsely yield coffee that tastes weak and bland. Too fine a grind can result in over-extraction and bitter-tasting coffee.
Whether you are using pre-ground coffee or beans, you’ll achieve the best results with a medium grind.
1. Before brewing, warm the thermal carafe by filling it with hot water for a few minutes.
2. Measure one heaping tablespoon (7-8 grams) of coffee for every 2 cups of water, 100-150 ml each. You can then adjust to taste.
3. Measure the water into the machine, and brew. Coffee produced with a thermal brewer will stay hot and fresh for several hours, but is best savored within a couple of hours.
3. Clean your coffeemaker regularly to remove oil residue and mineral build-up that can make coffee taste stale and bitter. A weekly cleaning with a purchased coffee machine cleaner and descaler will keep your machine in top condition and ensure consistently good flavor.
